SATGUR HOYE DAYAL
“And when the broken-hearted
people
Living in the world
agree
There will be an
answer, let it be…”
(From the
song ‘Let it Be’ by The Beatles)
As
I write this Post, two contrasting scenes come before me…
The first scene is from the film ‘Lagaan’… For long, there is a drought in the village and the people are heart-broken, anxious, and worried… They have come together with the last hope: a heart-wrenching plea to God…
O Paalanhare, Nirgun
aur Nyaare
O Paalanhare, Nirgun
aur Nyaare
Tumre bin hamra
kaunon naahin
This song is my
all-time favourites, as that’s how you and I have been praying – whether alone,
as a family or as a community – just crying out to the Lord… ‘Have mercy on us,
O Lord’…
And does the
Lord hear?
The hope says, ‘He
does’… our sincere trust and faith say, ‘He does’…
The second scene
that comes before me is from the villages of Punjab which are presently devastated
by floods… And, we find ourselves pleading to the same merciful Lord… to end
these floods. Lakhs of people have been displaced, lives and livestock have
been washed away… houses, vehicles, schools, and even worship places, have not
been spared… Our hearts cry, ‘O Lord, have mercy on us’…
Drought and
floods are metaphors of life, here… the ebbs and flows of life…
While Government,
groups and individuals are all doing their bit to help the hapless people of
Punjab, you and I can do our bit – say a
simple, sincere prayer.
Today
is Mother Mary’s birthday. We Catholics call it the Nativity Day. I remember
growing up in our village in Mangalore. Like in every Catholic household, we
would assemble as a family… It was for our grandfather to lead the family
prayer invoking the grace of Mother Mary… Remembering his children (my uncles
and aunts) who had migrated to different cities, his voice would crack up,
throat would choke up… and, that’s when, it was for my mother to take it over…
I remember this
scene very, very fondly. If my mother was alive today, she would have, most
definitely, included three additional Hail Mary’s in her daily evening prayers
for the people of Punjab. She was like one of those villagers from the drought-hit
village from the film ‘Lagaan’… Her trust in Mother Mary was childlike… her
faith was rock-solid…
Thus,
I am dedicating today’s Post for the worried and hapless people from the
flood-ravaged villages of Punjab…
Satgur Hoye Dayal…
Lord, have mercy
on your children…
Tumre bin hamra
kaunon naahin…
Mother Mary, please come before your children to comfort…
Amen.
