YE DIL, ALWAYS, MAANGE MORE

“Wanting more is just a recipe for heartache.”

Stephen King

How much is really enough? Is there a point in life, you and I will stop chasing, pursuing, wanting more and more and more? Will we ever say in our lives, ‘Enough’?

To describe this human dilemma in Jesus’ words, “It’s as difficult for us to do that as it’s for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle.”

Wanting more is a universal disease – a pandemic -  of human soul…

It’s never enough… Ever.

Well, if you ask me, “Have you stopped wanting more?”… Yes, my answer to that question is – “Not yet, Sir.”

I know how difficult it is for me to walk through the eye of this needle… Ye dil, always, maange more… and more and more ji!

This morning, I bumped into this young man, who was my student some years ago. He lives here in this vicinity in his parents’ one-room house. In fact, he was born and has lived here for all his 30-plus years. He said, that he has been working for a real estate enterprise which promotes premium properties, both residential and commercial. The properties are developed by some of the top developers both in India and Dubai. When I heard from him the price of a  3-BHK, 4-BHK and 5 BHK, I felt dizzy!

“Who can afford to buy such properties?” I asked, quite innocently.

“Sir, it’s not necessarily the businessmen or professionals… Young men and women draw salaries in even crores. They are ready to pay for these properties.”

As a Commerce teacher for more than 45 years, I have been teaching young kids this: 2 + 2 = 4…

It’s, clearly, no more that way…

The young man, who I met this morning, deals with his high net-worth customers, every day,  for his own bread and butter… and, at the end of the day, returns to his parents’ humble one-room kutir

As I do to mine, every day…

For us, 2 + 2 can never be 4,000, you see…

Meanwhile, I am told the share market is badly down (I am told, I said)… Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina, Ashish Chanchlani, Apoorva Makhija – and many, many from their fraternity, apparently, are worried, it seems…

How much is really enough – how many more subscribers, how many more views, how many more vulgar jokes, how many more silly laughs… and, above all, how many more crazy, crazy crores stacked in bank?

And, endearingly, the young man and I discussed all these funny things, this morning, over our princely cutting chai, at a roadside tapri

It’s interesting to see how much things have changed. While high salaries and expensive properties seem out of reach for many, it’s clear that people’s priorities are shifting.

Still, true success isn’t just about wealth—it’s about balance and staying grounded. Your thoughts really make us think about what matters most in life.
