YOU DO GREY IN LIFE

“I am black or white; I will never be grey in my life.”

Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona died yesterday, at the age of 60. Being his ardent fan, I couldn’t bring myself to accept the way he looked, now… He had bloated like a huge football, and when he walked, I, literally, closed my eyes! The images of charismatic Maradona of the eighties had been robustly embedded on the minds of most of his fans, including me, who watched him in the field with his lightning speed and magical skills… That was our Diego Maradona: The God of football!

“To see the ball, to run after it, makes me the happiest man in the world,” Maradona once said talking about his love for football. This statement speaks on behalf of every man or woman, who rise to the top in their respective fields – sports, music, acting, business, painting … any field, any profession, any game. There is no alternative route to excel in your ‘game’. As Maradona said, when you see the ‘ball’, you’ve got o feel super-excited… and ‘running after it’ should make you the happiest person in the world. Simply said, to excel in any field – any ‘game’ – you need to be incredibly passionate. Of course, it doesn’t stop there: you need to be equally focused, committed, and patient. Skills, such as Maradona’s, simply don’t get developed just like that. No one is born with them. Luck has nothing to do with them… Yes, you need to slog hard the way Maradona did.

Because that’s the universal key to succeed in any endeavour, I admired and shall continue to admire, stars like Diego Maradona and Elvis Presley… There is a valuable lesson to learn from their lives: That, you can’t be at the top of your game for ever… You do grey … You do fade away!

“I am with the crowd but oh  so alone!” sang Elvis Presley in one of his songs.

Both, Maradona (who died at 60) and Presley (who died at 42) loved the ‘games they played’. But, somewhere when the ‘ball began to slip’, these two legends seemed unprepared to play the game… Whatever happened to them towards the end of their lives is a priceless legacy for ordinary souls like you and me: We know what is not to be done!

After all, all Legend were once ordinary souls like you and me. Rightly, therefore, their legacy belongs to us…
