NOBODY CAPTURES SUCH MOMENTS

“All human miseries derive from

not being able to sit quiet in a room alone.”

Blaise Pascal

Some days’ ago, I had attended the wedding nuptials of my nephew, Wendel in one of the churches is Thane. The bride, Olivia, looked beautiful in her wedding gown. My wife, having undergone two angioplasties lately, had opted to bless the young couple from home... Thus, I sat alone among several guests and witnessed the solemn event...

You see, in today’s hi-tech and social media world, we get to see several guests busy clicking pictures of everything that unfolds, both at the nuptials as well as the reception venue. The work done by the official photographers and videographers may take days and weeks to reach us. But, the pictures and videos captured by these guests do reach wide and far instantly – mostly in family groups...

I am bad in clicking pictures. I, also, have this bad habit of involving in what is going on at present... One such moment, at the nuptials, has always been when the priest officiates the wedding vows. This time around, my wife was not next to me in the church. So, I kept my head down and heard well what the priest was guiding the young couple to say... “In our good times and bad times... In our health and sickness... till death do us (a)part...”

Probably, when my wife and I exchanged those vows nearly thirty-five years ago, we might not have grasped fully the significance of those vows. We, too, must’ve been more concerned about the grand event... And, now, here I was with my head down in the church, absorbing the essence of those vows... as if my wife and I were there in place of Wendel and Olivia...

Such moments are quiet, private moments. Nobody captures such moments and shares them in the family groups. You see, there are so many quiet, private moments, so powerful and poignant, which we choose to simply cherish in the quiet corridors of our hearts.

At times, my hands stop typing: “No, don’t tell this to anyone,”... “It’s okay, if you don’t say anything even if you think the story is great,”... “It’s okay, if you let things simply pass by.” I heed this inner voice, and let stories just pass by... “It’s okay, if I don’t capture the live images and stories and relay them for the world.”

And, just this evening, a friend of mine had shared this cute, teddy message:

I was smiling... “What have you done lately?”

Oh, how I, too, wished to broadcast those grand, pompous deeds! How I, too, wished to capture those memories for ‘eternity’!

But, then, as Kathryn L. Nelson says, “Sometimes, it’s the quiet observer who sees the most.”
