OUR GREATEST CURSE
A few days ago, some of us were discussing on the subject: ‘The greatest curse to man.”
“Why should anyone curse man…and, of all, why should All-merciful God do
it?” some argued, “Man invites his own curse.”
It made a lot of sense, in deed.
If God is loving and compassionate, He would never curse his children.
So, man invites his own curse, through his own attitude and behavior.
“It is man’s poverty… his inability to make enough money in spite of his diligence
and hard-work,” some argued.
“It is man’s low self-esteem and not necessarily his low economic or
social position in life,” some opined.
Some thought it was man’s inability to appreciate, feel grateful and
enjoy whatever God has blessed him with.
Yet, some really felt, “Man’s greatest curse comes when he chooses to
live a life of envy, hatred and revenge… when he ceaselessly tries to pull
others down and goes about living in a deep sense of insecurity… Yes, even
though he is blessed with ample wealth.”
Personally, I agreed with the last view. Imagine, I have everything –
great wealth, health, family and name… Yes, I am blessed with all these
privileges from God… I am rewarded handsomely for my efforts… Still, if I do not
choose to value, appreciate and enjoy these fruits, these rewards and blessings,
and, instead, I choose to consciously ‘conspire’ against others… how to stop
them going ahead in life, how to pull them down, how to malign them, destroy
them… Oh yes, to me, this is the worst kind of curse man can ever invite on himself…
To me, that’s the penury of his heart… the leprosy of his mind!
He has every thing… He is blessed with Heaven… and, yet, he chooses to live
in hell!
So,
why should God, the merciful Father, curse us, his children?
It is we, His thankless children,
that invite our own curses…
and, with that,
the poverty of our hearts
and the leprosy of our minds…
Our greatest curse is: having everything in life and, yet, being unable to value, appreciate
and enjoy what we have been blessed with!
