THE HUMAN SIDE OF GLORY
“Time
has a wonderful way of showing us
what
really matters.”
Margaret
Peters
In
Life, we really can’t have it all… Many of us have tried, or are still trying,
to have it all. But, in Life, to get something, we have to give up something…
That’s called ‘trade-off’. In other words, nothing comes to us without
sacrificing something.
Many a time, the
sacrifice may prove costly, and what we ‘get’ through the trade-off may not
seem worth it. Yes, Time and Life teach us this important lesson.
The
night before last, my wife and I watched the film (a 2020-OTT release) on late ‘Shakuntala Devi’,
the legendary mathematician, who was hailed as the ‘Human Computer’. The film is
written and directed by Anu Menon, and Vidya Balan plays the genius
mathematician. It’s an amazing film. In fact, my wife and I (We believe, we are
not alone in this) were left speechless to see the ‘Human side’ of the story of
this ‘Human Computer’ - Shakuntala Devi.
As I said at the
outset, in Life, nothing comes to us without a trade-off. What we, as star-struck
gullible, generally, tend to get carried away with is the ‘visible success’ –
the glory in the eyes of the world… the astounding achievements, the laurels,
the records, the Forbes’ list and, of course, the glamourous life style…
And, what we,
invariably, tend to overlook – or don’t tend to care about – is the dark,
lonely and painful ‘invisible story’ behind the visible glory. Shakuntala Devi’s
life story leaves us with several questions haunting…
I do not wish to
spoil your experience of watching this ‘must-watch’ film…
Watch it, not
for what you already knew about the Legend; watch it, for what you did not know
about her… And, do it for this important reason: to know, as to what can drive us to achieve more in Life… and at cost.
