NO, THIS IS NOT ALL YOU HAVE
“I am not a win-at-all-cost guy.
Winning isn’t everything… It’s second to breathing.”
George Steinbrenner
Winning
gives me, too, thrills; but, not ‘winning at all cost’… Winning at all cost
gives me chills!
Last night, I
watched the (2011) English film – ‘Butter’ (on OTT). Frankly, I hadn’t heard
about this film before. Even more, I hadn’t heard about an art called ‘Butter
Carving’, leave alone a competition in this art…
In the film, Bob
Pickler is a master butter-carver and is an unbeaten champion for fifteen
years. On the advice of a senior jury member, Bob decides to quit competing, so
that others get a fair chance to win…
But, Laura, the
ambitious and aggressive wife of Bob, is angry at her husband’s decision. Bob
tries to reason it out with Laura, but fails. Finally, Laura (whose only
credential as a butter-carver is her total support to Bob over fifteen years) announces,
that she is going to compete and win ‘at any cost’… that’s by any means.
So, at the end,
when she loses to a ten-year-old orphaned girl, Destiny, Laura cannot take it…
Yes, she tries all foul means to defeat and defame the little girl so that she
can take away the ‘trophy’… Laura fails. When the two come face-to-face, little
Destiny graciously greets Laura; but Laura tells Destiny, that while the latter
has plenty of years ahead to win, she (Laura) doesn’t… “This is all I have,” she
breaks down!
It takes a
ten-year-old orphaned soul to let Laura – the wife of a 15-time undefeated-champion
– know the simple truth, that winning isn’t everything, it is only second to
breathing… “No, this is not all you have,” comes the badi baat from the chota
muh…
When Laura melts
down to her knees to hug the little one, I could feel the glory so quietly resting
in my own breath… I could hear: “There is so much more for me… There is so much
more!”
