MAN, WHO CHASES TWO RABBITS, CATCHES NEITHER
“In the age of distraction, single-tasking is a superpower.”
Greg McKeown
I don’t think, we can accomplish
any worthwhile goal in Life, if we lack clarity and focus. And, we cannot
expect clarity and focus to be our allies when we are constantly distracted by
a hundred ‘useless’ things…
‘Useless things’
are those things which are neither urgent nor important. The more we focus on such
things now, the more blurred gets our vision… When we focus on things which are
not related to our goals, we are bound to be swayed away from our goals…
In Life, our energies,
always, flow where our attention goes… What we focus on in Life, it grows…
I have been
teaching hundreds of young kids for decades. I have noticed this: The bigger
their schools and households, sorry to say this, the bigger their distractions…
Well, I am
aware, that we cannot paint everyone with the same brush… But, then, when these
kids are given almost everything at their beck and call, why would they spend
so much energy to ‘achieve’ anything the hard way – the good-ole way?
There
are a hundred daily distractions for today’s kids. These distractions have made
these kids poor in patience, depth, listening and registering… Jack of all
trades and master of none. As Greg McKeown says, “In the age of distraction,
single-tasking is a superpower.”
(Lalit Sanpal... The Little Champ)
Lalit
Sanpal studied under me when he was in Class XI and XII. He went to a local
school and Junior college (State Board). Mother struggled financially as father
had major health issues. But, I remember this tiny-looking boy: His mother
proudly said, “Sir, my son is very focused and hardworking… He stands first in
his class.”
And, that was so…
Mother’s faith in her son was well-founded. The boy had clarity and focus as he
was least distracted… Moreover, he was living under financial constraints…
There was greater motivation and urgency, you see…
“What is the
goal, my boy?”
“Chartered
Accountancy, Sir.”
“Are you ready
for it?”
“Yes, Sir.”
While so many
students I see struggling to clear their CA entrance, Inter and Final exams,
this little fellow (He still looks so at 23!) cleared all of them in the very
first attempt!
When the mother
and son had come to meet me after he was recruited by a major financial organization,
she exuded the same faith in her son: “Sir, my son is very focused and
hardworking.”
Perhaps, clearing
Chartered Accountancy in his first attempt doesn’t seem to be ‘the major goal’
for this little-champ… It seems, the major goals are yet to be achieved…
You know what I
mean…
