DOES MONEY CARE, AND DO TEARS ADD VALUE?
“Money doesn’t care;
your tears don’t add value.”
Kevin O’Leary (on reality TV show – ‘Shark Tank’)
Those
of us, who started something on our own, to earn our bread and butter – yes, we
were always called ‘Self-employed’. We were the traditional entrepreneurs who
ran some businesses or professions, and went about making them grow slowly and
steadily. And, yes, while most of us went about slowly and steadily, like the proverbial
tortoises, some shot up with lightening speed… These Hares were hailed as ‘tycoons’
or Business Mughals’…
That story sounds
like a story from the B & W movie era in this world flooded with new
vocabulary – ‘Start-ups’, ‘Dragon’s Den’ and ‘Shark Tank’. Young boys and
girls are hooked on to this kind of – often brash, ruthless – TV shows. So many
of them swear by these shows or the men and women that host them…
Well, I haven’t
watched even a single episode of ‘Dragon’s Den’ (Canadian TV show) or ‘Shark
Tank’ (American TV show). But, I have heard endless the ‘animated’ stories about
them from the young and old viewers…
So, am I being a
closed-minded, an old-fashioned, simpleton?
Frankly, I prefer
to be referred to that way…
Kevin
O’Learly, I am told, is the man responsible to make the shows – both ‘Dragon’s
Den’ and ‘Shark Tank’ – insanely popular through his cold-blooded approach
towards the participants. To me, anything that shocks or tears up participants,
through high-voltage brashness or emotions, is the selling recipe of every reality
show out there…
For eons, people
like you and I have gone about doing our little business or profession things
without watching this high-voltage drama on televisions… The world amazingly
thrived and has come this far. So, now, when someone like Kevin O’Leary evangelizes,
cold-bloodedly, his business gospel:
“You may lose
your wife; you may lose your dog… Your mother may hate you. None of those
things matter. What matters is, that you
achieve success and become free… Then, you can do whatever you like.”…
Yes, when I hear
that, I wonder what kind of gospel that is!
Anyway, who
cares about what I wonder… There are enough believers in Kevin’s gospel… They
love to be comforted with his blunt message every time they cry: “Money
doesn’t care; your tears don’t add value.”
I still wonder
what that really means…
