IF YOU START SOMETHING, FINISH IT

“It’s so simple really:

If you say you’re going to do something, do it.

It you start something, finish it.”

Epictetus

Rome was not built in one day. Well, nothing is…

Yes, in life, every thing takes time… Everything wants us to wait…

But, then, just wait without doing any efforts?

That’s what I want to write in this Post…

Don’t just wait waiting for the heavens to manifest everything for you. No Sir… Heavens support you only if you start something – however small it is – but, keep doing it, with more and more and more dedication and passion… “Success is all about consistency around the fundamentals,” stresses Robin Sharma

When I came across the phrase ‘bulldog determination” in Napoleon Hill’s books, I remember falling in love with it, instantly… That bulldog grip is too powerful… That little dog doesn’t give up, once he gets his grip on it…

And, we?

Yes, we give up easily… when there is the slightest challenge before us… You and I – we all have to learn it from the little canine…

Don’t give up your grip easily…

One of the most common sights to see for me, almost every day in my classroom, is lack of consistency. The young kids, somehow, do not get this lesson early on… That, nothing grows overnight… Everything grows only overtime… As someone said, “It took me twenty long years to become an overnight success.”

Napoleon Hill keeps telling how he had to wait for twenty long years to put together the success philosophy of Andrew Carnegie, the Steel Magnet of his time. We have heard how, for twenty long years, Sir. Richard Attenborough, too, stayed faithful to his dream of making his inspiring film, ‘Gandhi’. Nelson Mandela saw the birth of a free nation (the end of tyranny and apartheid) from the little window of his prison in Robben Island… Imagine, a man not giving up on his faith and vision for 27 long years!. Moses led the salves of Egypt for forty years to reach the ‘Promised Land’… Though he did not live to see the ‘Promised Land’, he was the one who had been to the mountain-top to see it first and inspire his fellowmen to follow him through the wilderness… Yes, for forty long years through the deserts!

The early we realize the power of consistency, the longer we enjoy its fruits. As John Maxwell says, “Trust must be built every day. It calls for consistency.”

The opposite is so true, too: When we lack consistency, we lack self-trust, self-confidence... Period.

Whosoever has reached his coveted place in life, had started it somewhere, sometime, in a small way. But, because he kept on going, kept on doing, he has been able to complete his task…

The Mountain Man, Dashrath Manjhi, did it that way – with a chisel and hammer – breaking the mountain with one attempt at a time -  but, for 22 long years… The mountain broke; Dashrath didn’t!

Have we started anything? Let’s finish it, then… Yes, no matter how long it takes…
