CALMNESS OF CONSCIOUS CHOICE

Last afternoon, I attended a funeral ceremony of a senior citizen. He was one of the finest gentlemen I had known for years… very sensitive, compassionate, caring and giving. Every one, who had known him, says the same thing – “He was such a gentle soul.” In the same breath, most of us have asked this mysterious question: “Why bad things happen to good people?”

Cancer, depression and several other complications made life of this fine gentleman quite sad and lonely…

There must’ve been quiet pain, a deep sense of hurt and betrayal… worry, sadness and bitterness… and, it must’ve manifested in the form of depression, cancer and other complications…

I hesitate to judge and reason out… The truth is that, the funeral pyre consumed all that was mortal – the pain, sorrow, bitterness, loneliness… all.

At least five men and women were placed on the pyres, simultaneously, to be cremated… I could easily guess, how different all departed men and women were economically and in the so-called ‘social status’…

But, then, in that quietness, no one asked about the ‘social status’… The flames consumed all and turned them into ashes…

All left… leaving behind everything… They came with nothing, they left with nothing…

I left the crematorium a lot moved. I think, this kind of inner churning – what they call ‘Shamshan Vairagya’ - however short-lived it is, yes, it helps…





Peace is a conscious choice… If we start reading and interpreting each word, action and event and allow ourselves to be driven by these stories, we end up being driven crazy, insane and depressed. All reading and interpretations do not happen through our conscious mind… Most of them happen through our sub-conscious mind. We have no choice over the stories written through the sub-conscious scripts… They are sad stories, horror stories… They make our lives miserable…

So, when we recognize this fact, we find before us the key to open the door of our peace… To write our stories through our conscious mind… Trust and love are what we choose here… Acceptance, forgiveness and healing – these are possible only here… When we consciously choose to trust and love…

The funeral pyre, I think, cannot consume trust and love…





“Everything must’ve gone with those flames, except trust and love chosen through conscious choice… That will be the legacy  of a ‘good man’…” I heard saying to myself, “It’s the calm by conscious choice… Imperishable!”

Pic.; Ashwin Mohta M y Hindi was always bad. It still is. One reason for this was, that they introduced Hindi for us only in 6 th standard. Or, was it in 8 th ?
