GOD SEES THE TRUTH, BUT WAITS

“Always pick your battles carefully;

and let Karma take care of the rest.”

Anthon St, Maarten

Last night, a dear family friend of ours was talking to my wife and me. For years, he and his family were fighting a legal battle to reclaim their hard-earned property from a dishonest tenant. The matter had travelled all the way from the local Magistrate’s court to the Supreme court… leaving our friend and his family financially, mentally, physically drained. There were countless moments of doubt, frustration and hopelessness… There were, also, endless moments of blame, anger, and even fear… Yet, our friend’s family – who were absolutely placed on the right side of the truth – held the fort and kept faith, both, in the worldly and divine justice… And, finally, two days ago, the Highest Court of this land, handed justice to our friend and his family… They not only reclaimed their property and arrears of rent of years, they also reclaimed their honour and hope… It was a battle worth fighting… It was a justice worth waiting!

I remembered how (in our village) an immediate neighbor of ours – a well-off person – had harassed our simpleton dad and family for fourteen long years with a false litigation… He claimed, that his three cents land was inside our land. Despite every record to prove, that this person’s claim was baseless, he and his wife kept intimidating and frustrating my poor dad, who had neither the means nor the wherewithal to fight this legal battle… All mediation had failed… The man and his wife wanted, at any cost, the ‘three cents of land’. We children were small and unable to understand the gravity of the situation… How such litigations could take a heavy toll on the weaker people… By weaker, I mean, financially, mentally and physically. My dad, and mom, despite their weakness, chose to fight this battle to the best of their abilities. During these fourteen years, our neighbour was paralyzed, unable to move a limb or speak a word… He died soon… But, his wife refused to withdraw the case… Soon, she turned senile… and despite seeking my mom’s help for every little thing, she refused to drop the case… Some years later, she, too, died a lonely death… The palatial house turned into a devil-forsaken one… In some years, it crumbled and became a fallen kingdom… Now, a thick jungle has grown over what once stood as a rich-man’s kingdom… After fourteen long years, the court case had died its natural death… The Karma had done the rest, yes.

During these traumatic years of our family, I had come across, in school, Leo Tolstoy’s amazing story – ‘God Sees the Truth, but Waits’. For those who are unfamiliar with this tale: It’s a tale about a man who is falsely sent to jail for 27 years on a murder charge… How this man loses his family, fortune and youthful years, but gains faith in God… and hope. Above all, how he gains the power of forgiveness and peace, even when, in in his prison cell, he meets the man responsible for his trauma…

And, recently, I had come across the story of Archie Williams, who had to spend 37-long years in jail for a murder he had not committed… See this to believe this…

In life, many battles are not worth fighting. But, some, certainly, are… And, the wait, certainly, is worth it…

For, God does see the truth, but waits!
