THE BABY SUN

I know… tomorrow will be another day;

I have heard… it will be a new day.

I know… tomorrow will come like a gentle bride;

And, when it comes,

I will not hear the trumpets from far,

Nor will I see the Comets in the sky.

It will be another day…

Of another hope…

Of another chance.

My heart longs to be free from its burden

When tomorrow comes;

It longs to see the baby sun…

All through the day…

Oh! So tender…

So loving…

So full of promise.

They say: “Who knows… Tomorrow may not come!”

They remind me:

“Sit beside your ailing dad…

Listen to your rebel son…

Kiss your nagging partner…

Bless your hell-bent tomentor.”

Hey, the ‘Tomorrow’ has come…

This day, ‘Today’…

One more day, One more chance…

Like a gentle bride

With a new hope and a new promise.

This lady who died in the sleep last night

Was not that old…

I had met her yesterday

And wished her “Good afternoon”.

I see the white sheet and the bamboo sticks,

I see the earthen pot and marigold garlands,

I see the barber’s razor shaving off the young man’s scalp…

A few moments from now…

Will go all things into ashes.

“From dust to dust, from ashes to ashes!”

Amen.

I long to see the baby sun…

All through the day!

No trumpets heard…

No Comets seen…

Only a white sheet and some bamboo sticks!
