THE LAW AND THE JUSTICE

To me the biggest take away from the movie, ‘Section 375’ is its fundamental message: ‘The Law and the Justice are not the same’…

For long, and for some strange reasons, I was waiting for someone to put forward this point strongly. ‘Section 375’ has done it, with hammer and tongs!

Another point, though central to the story of the movie, again, for some strange reasons, I was waiting for someone to convey it strongly, was: the sexual relationships – be it within the marriage or outside the marriage – when turn sour can, also, turn unpredictably dangerous, traumatic and ugly…

It is, always, as long as it goes… But, the ugly turn, pray, never comes…

The Wise have always advised us to keep the hospitals and the courts away… How can we, but?

We need doctors and we need lawyers… just as we need teachers, priests, traders and all in life…

The hospitals and the courts, however despised they may be, do come calling like uninvited guests… We better learn how to deal with them…

In Munna Bhai MBBS, on the orientation day of the Medical college, the Dean (Boman Irani) asks the starry-eyed young medical students as to why they want to be good doctors. An enthusiastic girl, fired by her idealism, says, “Sir, I want to treat patients like my friends.”

“Sorry my young friend,” the Dean pours water on the idealism, “For a doctor, a patient can never be a friend, it’s just a ‘sick body’!”. What he says immediately after that, to justify what he said, is an eye-opener not only for aspiring doctors, but to all of us. He shows his hands to the students and says, “Look at these hands… They have performed hundreds of operations, and yet, they are rock-steady. But, God forbid, if I have to operate my own daughter, you may see them trembling!”

Even the best of the best surgeons, knows this sad truth…

The best of the best lawyers, including the Chief Justice of a country, knows what a court is!

We do not go to hospitals seeking health… We go there when our heath collapses. Yes, we go there to get it ‘fixed'. The reason to go to courts can be so strange. You drag some one or you are dragged by someone… Yes, it can be so strange! And, by the time you come out of it all… like we see in ‘Section 375’, you not only see what happens to relationships when turned sour, but, you also see what happens to justice when turned sour!

“Sir, the justice is not done,” when a young lawyer laments to the senior counsel, while the movie concludes, he calms her down: “We are not in the business of Justice; we are in the business of Law.”

Whether your relationship is rock-steady or rocked, please don’t miss this movie…

It’s not about rape!
